Chapter Fourteen

It was a moonless night but still very warm. There were streetlights in the vicinity, which was filled with industrial buildings. Jayden moved quickly but cautiously toward the spot where Ulisses’s GPS indicated he was stopped. A lot was running through his mind as he slipped along—foremost was the text Nadia had just sent him. He couldn’t believe the bad luck in having the FBI agents show up at his office. He hoped Booker and Owens could keep them under control, but he knew Special Agent Press was headstrong, and if he found out there had been a ransom demand, he would want to take over. Jayden could only pray that the more even-headed senior agent would see that interference at this point would only endanger lives.

Jayden knew there wasn’t anything he could do that he wasn’t already doing. Bullet was staying close and being as silent as a mouse. He walked on noiseless pads. It was a comfort to have him along. He hoped to be able to spot Ulisses and whoever was with him, and more than anything, he prayed that the women were here. If he found them, he’d call for backup and end the whole thing right there. He suddenly pounded his head and whispered to Bullet, “I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner. If Nadia knew where I was, she could tell me how close I am to Ulisses.”

The dog looked up at him, his gray face barely discernable in the dark alcove they’d slipped into. Jayden pulled out his phone and punched in Nadia’s number.

“Jayden, are you okay?” she asked urgently. “Have you spotted my father yet?”

“Yes and no,” he whispered. “I’m fine, but I haven’t located your father. I need you to do something for me. Do you have the Find My Phone app on your iPhone?”

“Yes. What do you need me to do?”

“Find my phone,” he said. “I have the app too.”

“Jayden, are you sure you’re okay? You’re talking on your phone. You haven’t lost it,” she said.

“Oh, that’s why it isn’t in my pocket. Good grief.” He allowed himself a quick, quiet chuckle. Then he said, “I need you to know where I am and then tell me how close I am to your father’s phone,” he whispered. “If I’d had another GPS tracking device, I’d already have you watching where I go, but I don’t.”

“Got it. I’ll need to end the call, but I’ll call you back from your office phone as soon as I locate the signal.”

“That’s my girl, but first, tell me, has Agent Press arrested anyone yet?”

“No, but I think he’d like to. Thank goodness his partner has a level head. Press tried to keep Grandpa from leaving with the money.”

“Did he know it was money?”

“No, Grandpa told him it wasn’t his business. And Andrews said to let Grandpa go.”

“Where are the agents?”

“In your reception area, talking to Chief Owens and Mr. Booker,” she reported. “I’m in here alone at the moment.”

“Have you heard any gunshots?” he asked wryly.
